Shiren

Heard about Shiren the Wanderer on Retronauts today. I might pick it up.

I really dig Roguelike games. I never got very far in Nethack because I'd eventually grow tired of the interface. I think the DS could solve those issues. A bit of nice SNES-era sprites can't hurt either.

Reprovision Instructions

posted by pfunk on 2008-03-07 07:50:05

For future use, here's how I set my server back up from a clean wipe.

Add pfunked to /etc/sudoers

Start the mysql service
sudo /etc/init.d/mysqld start

upload the mysqldump.sql to the server

Reload the mysql database
sudo mysql < mysqldump.sql

Run mysqlupgrade to fix any user tables
sudo mysql_upgrade

Create the website folders
sudo mkdir /var/www/foobar

Upload the website content to these folders

Load the Virtual Host settings into httpd.conf
And set AllowOverride = All to enable .htaccess files
sudo vim /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

Restart the Apache server
sudo /etc/init.d/httpd restart

(Note: GoDaddy's virtual dedicated servers now have MySQL5 and PHP5 by default, with PDO-MySQL support built in.)

Lay's Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat Chips

posted by pfunk on 2008-03-07 07:28:05

I want to turn you on to a particular bag of chips:

Lay's Kettle Cooked (original), Reduced Fat Chips.

The bag has light blue trim and features a sunflower on the front, with "made with 100% pure sunflower oil".

On the back, the ingredients read:
"Potatoes, Sunflower Oil, ans Salt".
Impressive. Compare to other chips, which have all kinds of junk thrown in. It's kinda sad that a product with the plain obvious ingredients are marketed as the "reduced fat" version; but, kudos to Lay's for having a reasonable product.

First off, these chips are delicious. Second, it doesn't have Olestra (don't confuse it with the other blue bags of chips!). Finally, if you're going to have chips, they're about as healthy as chips can get.

I'm on a bag-a-week habit now.

Ideas are Cheap

posted by pfunk on 2008-03-07 06:28:20

So here's one for free. Something I just dreamed about that could make a fun short movie. (I don't know why I dream about weird crap like this).

It's friday during the summer. Group of 6-8 teenage boys are prepping to see the new blockbuster zombie sequel (along with most of the other teenagers in the large town).

Some of the kids decide it's a good idea to watch the movie high. They get a bag of weed from a questionable source, smoke it up, and go to the theater.

Main character kid starts seriously tripping balls. Some of the other kids are very paranoid. Main kid (usually a good quiet kid, not a real smoker) has serious hallucinations and heightened paranoia. This can be explained by something strange the weed (rat poison, formaldehyde, etc) mixing with his prescription medication (Ritalin, asthma medicine, etc).

The hallucinations can either be played straight and revealed at the end (for serious zombie movie effect) or be exposed as they appear (for comedic effect)

He starts to misinterpret everything around him. A girl talking about an acne outbreak sounds like a zombie outbreak. The smoke from the weed looks like the neurotoxin infecting zombies in the movie. His buddy making out with a girl in the theater looks like a zombie devouring a victim. He starts to genuinely believe he and his friends are infected and will turn into zombies before the movie ends.

A couple of his weed smoking friends laugh him off, but some of them are paranoid and believe him.

He believes his sudden hunger is his zombie desire for brains. and actually tries to bite the head of some girl he knows/likes. Her response (she slaps him, or maybe she thinks he's kinky/hot) could be the climax of the comedic version or the big reveal of the serious version.
