No Country For Old Men
posted by pfunk on 2008-08-11 19:38:17Just watched No Country For Old Men. Wow. I like dark and I like it well done.
Sometimes I go a while without seeing a really good movie and forget how good they can really be.
Some people criticize movies like this. A lot of people don't like movies without tidy endings and full explanations. I think it's the same group of people that don't like poetry that doesn't rhyme, or jokes with no punch lines. Songs with no catchy chorus. I just can't relate.

By the way, Mel's blog is named The Vegan Monologues which I think is downright clever.

posted by pfunk on 2008-07-21 07:43:06With the recent Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (A2) and the new 4th edition D&D rules, I've been thinking a lot about tile and turn-based RPGs.
First off, I like 'em. Depending on how they're balanced, they can make character stats or dice rolls really matter. Whereas in an action game, a level one stablesweeper could defeat Bad Horse (Thoroughbred of Sin) if the player had enough skill.
There are a few things I don't like about tile games. It seems every turn characters will try to reflank each other, and the resulting tumble of combat is not very realistic. You could make facing not matter (as in Roguelikes) but I don't know if that's a good trade.
Anything you like/dislike about tile turn-based combat?
