Pixel Art

I'm a product of the NES/SNES generation of games. It was an era where one person could conceivably create an entire video game. I still dabble in game engines and tile art, chasing the dream of finishing a game I can be proud of.

Pixel Art is a term for digital painting with a one-pixel brush. It was popularized by the 8- and 16-bit generations of games. This page is devoted to my hobby of creating pixel art that may one day be used in games.

I'm releasing these under a Creative Commons license because I want others to add to and remix. If you use these models or create compatable derivatives, let me know (I'm happy to host derivative works or point a link your way).

Human Male Template

This set features a 64 pixel tall human male character. The character is of ideal proportions (8 heads high at 8 pixels per head). 64 is highly divisible so it should be little trouble resizing this model to other typical standard heights (48 pixel and 32 pixel are common in games).

man_walking (8 frames) Walking (8 frames)
man_crouch (3 frames) Crouching (2 frames)
man_running (12 frames) Running (12 frames)
man_climbing (3 frames) Climbing (3 frames)
man_jumping (2 frames) Jumping (2 frames)

Here's a test of the walk cycle. The character moves 8 pixels with each frame, and that keeps his steps approximately well planted. (I got lucky with it)

Testing the climbing motion. Here I have him translating to crouch, then standing.

The standing (front/side/back) view is good for character design. Here's an example character I made in no time from that template:
